Artist Statement

This photobook focuses on a disgruntled group of ex-fishermen from Grimsby, UK, whose livelihood were destroyed by the decline of the fishing industry in the early 1980s.

The devastating unemployment, sweeping deindustrialisation, expanding economic inequality, sense of government betrayal and bigotry of the media led the frustration and anger of a quiet majority to simply vote against the elite/establishment in the 2016 EU referendum. This project aims to raise social awareness and shed light on the factors that manifested themselves in Brexit, whilst looking closely at the loss of Grimsby’s identity through the intimate lives of these extraordinary ex-fishermen.

It seeks to remind us of the compassion needed for those whose lives were affected and/or destroyed by the establishment and the politics that fail so many. These are lives made up of love, friendship, loyalty and pride.
